Calcium Silicon (CaSi) is also known as Silicon Calcium Alloy or Ferro Silicon Calcium. This binary alloy consists of silicon and calcium, belonging to the category of iron alloys. Calcium silicon alloy is widely used in producing low carbon steel, stainless steel and other steel types and special alloys such as nickel-based and titanium-based alloys. Calcium silicon metal can be processed into calcium silicon lump, calcium silicon cored wire, calcium silicon granule and calcium silicon powder.

Usually, the chemical component of calcium silicon is 24-31% Ca and 55-65% Si. In addition, it also contains different amounts of impurities such as Fe, Al, C, S, and P.

1. In the steel industry, calcium silicon alloy is used as a composite deoxidizer and desulfurizer.
Since calcium has a strong affinity with oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon in molten steel, calcium silicon alloy is mainly used for deoxidation, degassing and fixation of sulfur in molten steel.
2. Calcium silicon produces a strong exothermic effect when added to molten steel, and can be used as a temperature increasing agent in converter steelmaking workshops.
3. Calcium silicon can effectively remove impurities and inclusions in molten steel and improve the quality of steel.
Calcium turns into calcium vapor in the molten steel, which stirs the molten steel and is beneficial to the floating of non-metallic inclusions. After calcium silicon alloy is deoxidized, non-metallic inclusions with larger particles and easy to float are produced, and the shape and properties of the non-metallic inclusions are also changed.
4. In the foundry industry, calcium silicon alloy is used as an inoculant for cast iron and an additive in the production of ductile iron.
In the production of cast iron, in addition to deoxidizing and purifying, calcium silicon alloy also plays a nurturing role, helping to form fine-grained or spherical graphite; it can evenly distribute graphite in gray cast iron and reduce the tendency of whitening; it can also increase silicon and desulfurize , improve the quality of cast iron.
5. In non-ferrous metal smelting, silicon-calcium alloy can effectively reduce metal impurities and improve metal purity and quality. At the same time, calcium silicon alloy can also promote the grain refinement of metal and improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of metal.
6. In chemical production, calcium silicon alloy can be used as a chemical reaction catalyst to increase reaction rate and yield.

Calcium silicon alloy is made from silica, lime and coke in a strong reducing atmosphere of 1500-1800 degrees. There are four processes for the production of CaSi alloy: mixing method (one-step method), two-step method, layered method and electrosilicothermal method.
China usually uses a one-step smelting method to smelt calcium silicon alloy, and there are two production methods:
1. Electric arc furnace smelting
Electric arc furnace smelting of silicon-calcium alloy has the advantages of high baking efficiency, high energy utilization, and good melt quality, but it has the disadvantages of high power consumption and unstable product quality.
2. Medium frequency furnace smelting
The medium frequency furnace smelting calcium silicon alloy has high production efficiency and low energy consumption, and can provide high quality calcium silicon alloy.
