What Is The Difference Between Ferrosilicon And Metallic Silicon

Ferrosilicon is an iron silicon alloy made by smelting coke, steel shavings, quartz (or silica) as raw materials in an electric furnace.

The use of ferrosilicon:

(1) Ferrosilicon is a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry. In steelmaking, ferrosilicon is used for precipitation deoxygenation and diffusion deoxygenation. Brick iron is also used as an alloying agent in steelmaking.

(2) Used as an inoculant and spheroidizer in the cast iron industry. In the production of ductile iron, silicon iron is an important inoculant (helping to precipitate graphite) and spheroidizing agent.

(3) Used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production. Not only is the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen high, but the carbon content of high silicon ferrosilicon is also very low. Therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloys) is a commonly used reducing agent in the production of low-carbon ferroalloys in the ferroalloy industry.

(4) 75 # ferrosilicon is commonly used in the high-temperature smelting process of metal magnesium in the Pijiang process. For each ton of metal magnesium produced, about 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon are consumed, which plays a significant role in the production of metal magnesium.

(5) For other purposes. Silicon iron powder, which has been finely ground or atomized, can be used as a suspended phase in the mineral processing industry.

(6) It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry. High silicon ferrosilicon can be used in the chemical industry to manufacture products such as silicone.

Metallic silicon, also known as crystalline silicon or industrial silicon, is mainly used as an additive for non ferrous alloys. Metal silicon is a product produced by smelting quartz and coke in an electric furnace, with a main component silicon element content of about 98%, and other impurities such as iron, aluminum, and calcium.

The classification of metallic silicon is usually based on the content of the three main impurities, iron, aluminum, and calcium, contained in the composition of metallic silicon. According to the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium in metal silicon, it can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, 411, 421, 3303, 3305, 2202, 2502, 1501, 1101, etc.
