Types Of Carbon Enhancers

In the process of steel smelting, the addition of carburising agents can effectively increase the carbon content of steel and improve its performance and quality. There are several types of carbon enhancers.

Petroleum coke-based carbon enhancers

This type of carbon enhancer is based on petroleum coke as raw material, which is calcined or graphitised at high temperature with high carbon content and low sulphur content. It is suitable for high end ductile iron and precision casting.

  • Calcined petroleum coke carbonizer: This kind of carbonizer is calcined at 1200~1350℃ to remove volatile matter and further reduce the sulfur content.
  • Graphitised petroleum coke carburizer: this kind of carburizer is graphitised above 2500℃, with more stable carbon structure and high absorption rate.

Coal-based carburant

This kind of carbon enhancer takes anthracite, bituminous coke or metallurgical coke as raw material, with low cost, but with high ash and sulphur content. It is suitable for ordinary grey cast iron or scenes with less stringent requirements on carbon content.

  • Anthracite Carbon Enhancer: This kind of carbon enhancer has to be calcined and pre-crushed.
  • Pitch coke carbon enhancer: this kind of carbon enhancer has low volatile matter but high sulphur content.

Natural graphite carburant

This type of carbon enhancer is based on natural flake graphite as raw material, it has low ash content but higher price. It is suitable for high-end casting and special alloy melting.

Biomass Carburising Agent

This type of carboniser is made from biomass carbonisation such as coconut shell and bamboo charcoal, it is environmentally friendly and sulphur free, but the carbon content fluctuates greatly. It is suitable for experimental environmental casting or special demand scenarios.
