Casting Inoculant Ferro Silicon
Products Description
Ferro silicon is widely used as an inoculant in the foundry industry, mainly for improving the organisation and properties of cast iron. Its core role is to improve mechanical properties by promoting graphitisation, grain refinement, etc. As a classical inoculant, the economy and ease of use of ferro silicon make it a basic material in the foundry industry, but in high precision or special cases, it needs to be combined with other inoculants or process optimisation in order to achieve the best results. Strict control of addition amount, particle size and temperature is required in practical application to avoid inoculation failure or negative effects.

Ferro silicon Inoculant Usage
Selection of suitable inoculants
- Silicon content: Select the appropriate ferro silicon according to the type of cast iron and process requirements, commonly used ferro silicon contains about 65%-75% silicon.
- Particle size: In practice, ferro silicon with a particle size of 0.2-3mm is generally selected, and the material needs to be uniformly fine to ensure rapid dissolution and distribution.
- Trace elements: Good quality ferro silicon contains small amounts of aluminium and calcium to enhance the breeding effect.
Timing and method of addition
- Instantaneous inoculation: Add before pouring, cover the surface of the molten iron or inject through the wire feeder.
- With the flow of breeding: in the pouring process through the dosing device with the liquid iron particles of ferro silicon into the casting, suitable for automated production.
- Pre-treatment: Ferro silicon needs to be dried to remove moisture and avoid porosity caused by hydrogen absorption in the molten iron.
Addition
- Grey cast iron: this method is usually 0.2%-0.6% of the weight of the liquid iron, the exact amount needs to be adjusted according to the cooling speed.
- Ductile Iron: This method is usually used in conjunction with a spheroidising agent, the amount added is about 0.4%-1.0%.
Cautions
- Excessive problem: Excessive silicon (>3.5%) may reduce the toughness of the cast iron, the total silicon content needs to be controlled.
- Temperature control: the temperature of the iron liquid should be 1400-1500℃ to avoid gestation decline.
- Composite breeding: can be matched with calcium silicon, strontium silicon and other composite breeding agent, to enhance the anti-decline ability.
