What is this

Silicon ferro is an iron alloy consisting of silicon and iron in varying proportions, the most widely used being 75% silicon ferro. Since silicon and oxygen can easily synthesize silicon dioxide, ferrosilicon is commonly used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking, and since SiO2 gives off a lot of heat, it can also raise the temperature of steel.

The uses of silicon ferro 

Deoxidizer
In the steelmaking process, steel generally contains a certain amount of oxygen, oxygen and other elements in the steel combined to generate harmful oxides, silicon ferro as a highly effective deoxidizer, can be combined with the oxygen in the steel to generate stable silicon dioxide, so as to remove the oxygen in the steel to prevent the generation of oxides, improve the quality and performance of steel.
Alloying agent
Silicon ferro can also be used as an alloying agent. Silicon is one of the important alloying elements in steel, which can significantly improve the hardness, strength and wear resistance of steel. By adding silicon ferro to molten steel, the silicon content of the steel can be controlled to produce an alloyed steel with specific properties. For example, steel with a high silicon content has good magnetic properties and is suitable for the manufacture of electrical equipment.
Reducing agent
In some smelting processes, silicon ferro is also used as a reducing agent. For example, in the production of electrical steel and silicon steel, silicon ferro can reduce the oxides in molten steel and improve the purity and quality of steel.
Slag forming agent
In some special smelting process, silicon ferro can be used as a slagging agent to help form a suitable slag layer, in order to facilitate the removal of impurities in steel.

 

How is silicon ferro produced?
There are several ways to produce ferrosilicon. Silicon ferro can be produced by reacting coke with silica. Alternatively, the alloy can be obtained by melting scrap steel and quartz along with a reducing agent in a submerged electric arc furnace. The hot liquid alloy is then poured into a bed of sand, cooled and crushed into small pieces. Depending on the size ordered, these small pieces can be further crushed to obtain the desired size.
