The Role of Silicon in Steel

Silicon plays a key role in steel production, primarily in its function as a deoxidiser and alloying element. Through these roles, silicon significantly improves the purity, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and electromagnetic properties of steel. 1. Deoxidizer
Silicon is commonly used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. During high-temperature steelmaking, molten steel contains oxygen, which combines with elements like iron and carbon to form oxide inclusions, adversely affecting steel quality. Silicon reacts with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂), reducing the oxygen content and enhancing the purity of the steel. The reaction is:

The silicon dioxide formed is usually removed as slag, improving the steel's purity by reducing oxide inclusions and increasing the steel's toughness and ductility.

 

2. Alloying Element
As an alloying element, silicon significantly improves the properties of steel:

 

2.1 Hardness and Strength
Silicon increases the hardness and strength of steel mainly through solid solution strengthening. Silicon atoms form a solid solution in the iron lattice, hindering dislocation movement, thereby enhancing the steel's strength and hardness.

 

2.2 Corrosion Resistance
Silicon improves the corrosion resistance of steel, especially in high-silicon steels. Silicon forms a dense oxide film on the steel surface, preventing further corrosion and enhancing the steel's oxidation and corrosion resistance.

 

2.3 Electromagnetic Performance
Silicon steel, known for its low electromagnetic losses, is widely used in transformers and motors. Silicon reduces hysteresis loss and eddy current loss, improving electromagnetic conversion efficiency and enhancing the efficiency of electrical equipment.
