Difference Between Silicon Metal Powder And Silicon Powder

Composition

  • Silicon metal powder: usually refers to silicon powder with high purity, whose main component is silicon (Si), and usually contains a small amount of iron, aluminium, calcium and other metal impurities.
  • Silicon Powder: Usually refers to all powdered substances in which silicon is the main component. In addition to containing high-purity silicon metal powder, it also includes some silicon powder containing other impurities or compounds, such as silica powder.

Production process

  • Silicon metal powder: Industrial silicon is made by crushing and grinding. Industrial silicon is usually obtained by reducing quartz sand with a carbonaceous reducing agent in an electric furnace. The industrial silicon is then further processed into the required silicon metal powder. The content of impurities needs to be strictly controlled during the production process to ensure the purity of the product.
  • Silica Powder: The production process of silica powder depends on the specific type. For example, silica powder is made by crushing and grinding silica (e.g. quartzite) and other physical processing methods.

Uses

  • Silicon Metal Powder: It is mainly used in the metallurgical industry as a deoxidiser and alloy additive for steel and iron making, which can effectively improve the quality and performance of iron and steel. In the foundry industry, it can also be used to improve the quality of castings
  • Silica Powder: Different types of silica powder have different uses. Silica powder is commonly used in glass manufacturing, ceramic production, refractory materials and other industries. Silicon carbide powder is commonly used in abrasives, refractory materials, electronic components and other fields.
