Silicon Metal 411

Silicon metal 411 is a type of silicon metal containing 99.4% silicon, 0.4% iron, 0.1% aluminum, and 0.1% calcium. It is commonly available in sizes of 0-10mm or 10-100mm and is primarily used in the production of organic silicon products. Silicon metal is the fifth largest non-ferrous metal variety in China, ranking behind aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead in production volume. According to relevant data, China's industrial silicon production reached 2.61 million tons in 2021. Based on end-use, industrial silicon can be categorized into two main types: metallurgical grade and chemical grade.

Chemical-grade silicon is used to produce organosilicon and polysilicon. Among these, organosilicon primarily uses grades such as silicon metal 411#, 421#, and 521#. Compared to the aluminum alloy industry, organosilicon production demands a higher purity of aluminum, typically below 0.2%. Organosilicon not only requires control over the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium but also specifies limits for trace elements such as titanium, phosphorus, and boron. On the other hand, polysilicon production involves purifying si and does not have strict requirements for the grades of industrial si, but it does require control over certain trace elements like boron and carbon, which can affect photovoltaic conversion efficiency. The market is particularly interested in polysilicon, which mainly consumes 421# industrial silicon, but 521#, 441#, 553#, and approximately 99% pure si (99 silicon) are also widely used. As production techniques advance and cost control becomes more critical, some metallurgical-grade industrial silicon is gradually becoming the mainstream specification for the polysilicon industry.
