Calcined Anthracite Coal Chemical Composition — Calcined Anthracite Specification

Calcined anthracite coal is a thermally treated smokeless coal, sourced from high-quality smokeless coal in the Ningxia Province of China. It is renowned globally alongside the Hon Gai coal from Vietnam and is hailed as the "coal king" of the world. Its main characteristics include low phosphorus, low ash content, and low sulfur. Therefore, it can be utilized not only as a carburizing agent in the steel and casting industries but also in the metallurgical industry for producing carbon blocks, cathode carbon blocks, carbon bricks, and carbon pastes.

In China, there are two commonly used types of calcined anthracite coal (CAC). One is gas-calcined anthracite coal, widely used in foundries and steel plants as a carburizing agent, while the other is electrically calcined anthracite coal, used for carbon electrode paste and cathode carbon blocks.

After calcination, the smokeless coal undergoes high-temperature treatment and screening, resulting in uniformly-sized particles, making it an ideal material for carburizing agents and electrode pastes.

In China, smokeless coal is usually calcined in electric furnaces, rotary kilns, and pot furnaces. The smokeless coal produced in electric furnaces is referred to as electrically calcined coal (ECA), while that produced in the other two furnaces is known as gas-calcined coal (GCA).

Electrically calcined anthracite, as a forging material, uses high-quality smokeless coal as raw material and reaches temperatures as high as 2000°C during forging. Through the forging of high-quality smokeless coal, the coal lattice is suspended, resulting in semi-graphitization. This material can then be modified to meet various specifications by altering its physical and chemical properties.

Due to its low volatile matter and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity (with a powder resistivity of around 600), it is primarily used in carbon bricks, electrode pastes, cathode carbon blocks, and other applications with specific conductivity requirements. Additionally, the proportion and particle size of ECA in such products vary according to different enterprise requirements.

The calcination temperature of GCA is around 1200°C, and its conductivity is far lower than that of ECA, but the sulfur content of smokeless coal is typically between 0.3-0.5%. GCA is widely used as a cost-effective coal carburizing agent in the steel and casting industries.
