Metal Silicon
Metal silicon is produced by reducing silica (SiO2) with carbonaceous reducing agents such as petroleum coke, washed coal, or charcoal in a smelting furnace. It contains at least 98.7% silicon. It is a crucial raw material for producing organosilicon compounds and polycrystalline silicon, and it is also used in the production of aluminum alloys for casting and deformation.

According to the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, Metal Si ranks fifth in production volume among nonferrous metal products, following aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead. In 2021, China's production of Metal Silicon products reached 2.61 million tons, marking a 24.3% increase compared to the previous year.
The production of industrial silicon blocks essentially involves purifying elemental si through the reduction of silica in the smelting process. Different producers may vary in silicon content, impurity levels, and particle sizes of their Metal Si products. In China, industrial silicon products are categorized according to national standards (GB/T 2881-2014), based on si content and the concentrations of major impurities such as iron, aluminum, and calcium. These products are widely used in alloy formulation, polycrystalline silicon production, and the manufacturing of organosilicon compounds.
It is primarily used in the production of organosilicon compounds, polycrystalline silicon, and aluminum-silicon alloys for casting. China stands as the world's largest producer and consumer of industrial silicon. According to SMM data, in 2021, global production of metal si reached 4.08 million tons, with China accounting for approximately 77.1% at 3.17 million tons (this data includes 97 silicon and recycled silicon, with a sample size larger than that of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association).
The global production and consumption of metal silicon Lump are largely balanced. In 2020, the largest consumer was the organosilicon sector at 39%, followed by the aluminum alloy industry at 37%. Polycrystalline silicon ranked third at 18%, but its consumption is rapidly growing, indicating significant future potential.
Compared globally, China has a substantial capacity for downstream consumption of silicon products. Its consumption structure is similar to the global pattern, with organosilicon, alloy silicon, and polycrystalline silicon accounting for 37%, 29%, and 26% of consumption in 2020, respectively. Particularly in polycrystalline silicon, China's consumption proportion significantly exceeds the global average, highlighting China's strong global clustering in polycrystalline silicon production.
