Electrolytic Manganese Flakes
Electrolytic manganese flakes is produced by leaching manganese ore to obtain manganese salts, which are then electrolyzed to extract pure manganese metal. It has an appearance similar to iron, forming irregular, brittle flakes with one smooth and one rough side, ranging in color from silvery white to brown. When processed into powder, it appears silvery-gray. Electrolytic manganese flakes oxidizes easily in air, dissolves in dilute acids releasing hydrogen, and can decompose water at slightly above room temperature.
The extraction of manganese metal is primarily done using two methods: thermal (pyrometallurgical) and electrolytic (hydrometallurgical). Thermal methods produce manganese with a purity of no more than 95-98%, while electrolytic methods yield a higher purity of 99.7-99.9% or more. The electrolytic method has become the predominant way of producing high-purity manganese.
