Low carbon ferromanganese is mainly used as an alloy additive in the steelmaking or foundry industry, and is especially widely used in the steel industry for the production of plates, pipes, strips and other steel grades. Adding appropriate amount of low carbon ferromanganese can improve the performance of steel and iron, and increase oxidation, corrosion and wear resistance.

At present, there are two traditional methods of producing low carbon ferromanganese in the ferroalloy industry:

 

One is remelting method, which is produced by remelting electrolytic manganese metal and scrap iron and steel as raw materials with medium frequency electric furnace. No chemical reaction occurs in the production process. The method is simple and easy to implement, but the comprehensive energy consumption of the product is high (according to the manganese metal power consumption of 6000Kwh/tonne, the comprehensive power consumption of the product is about 5600Kwh/tonne), and at the same time by the electrolysis of manganese metal resources and price constraints, the cost of production is high, and the product of sulfur content is often on the high side.

 

The second is the electro-silicon-thermal method, which is produced by desiliconization of high silica-manganese silicon (or low carbon silica-manganese) and high quality (high manganese, low iron and low phosphorus) imported manganese ores in the refining electric furnace. The production cost of this method is slightly lower than that of the remelting method, but it is constrained by the resources and prices of high silica-manganese (or low carbon silica-manganese) and high-quality imported manganese ores, the production cost is also higher, and the comprehensive energy consumption of the products is also higher (according to the high silica-manganese power consumption of 5,400Kwh/tonne, the comprehensive power consumption of the products is about 5,200kwh/tonne), and it is difficult to produce high-quality low-carbon ferromanganese with P<0.15%.
