Manganese metal (Mn) is a lustrous, steel-grey metal similar to iron, but harder and very brittle, so it has few applications as a pure metal and is mainly used in alloys. Manganese is a chemical element with the symbol Mn and atomic number 25. manganese makes up about 0.1 per cent of the Earth's crust. On a tonne basis, it is the fourth most used metal on Earth, after iron, aluminium and copper. Mn Metal has a variety of uses, including steel products, portable batteries or aluminium beverage cans. In each of these applications, Mn Metal plays an important role in improving the properties of alloys and compounds.

Application

When added to Mn Metal, elemental manganese rapidly combines with sulphur and oxygen, making it a key element in steel production. Manganese's tendency to oxidise helps to remove oxygen impurities while improving the workability of steel at high temperatures by combining with sulphur to form high melting point sulphides.
