Calcined petcoke is a black or dark grey hard solid petroleum product, with a metallic luster, porous, is formed by tiny graphite crystals granular, columnar or needle-like composition of carbonaceous material. Petroleum coke components are hydrocarbons, containing 90-97% carbon, 1.5-8% hydrogen, but also contains nitrogen, sulfur and heavy gold compounds. Petroleum coke is a by-product of cracking the feed oil of the delayed coking unit at high temperature to produce light oil products. The production star of petroleum coke is about 25-30% of the raw oil. Its low-level calorific value is about 1.5-2 times of that of coal, ash content is not more than 0.5%, volatile matter is about 11%, and its quality is close to that of anthracite.

•  Relevance to the upstream of the industry

The upstream of petroleum coke is the petroleum refining industry. Petroleum coke from the delayed coking unit is known as raw coke, which is calcined at a high temperature to obtain calcined petroleum coke. The process of high-temperature calcination of petroleum coke excludes water and volatile matter in raw coke and improves the internal structure. The bulk density, mechanical strength, electrical conductivity and antioxidant property of the calcined petroleum coke are improved, so that the physicochemical properties of the carbonaceous raw materials can be improved to meet the needs of processing and application of various carbonaceous materials.

The downstream graphite and carbon products of calcined petroleum coke can be applied in modern industries, including prebaked anodes for electrolytic aluminium, graphite electrodes for steel making, glass factories, power plants, cement factories and so on.

Electrolytic aluminium is aluminium obtained through electrolysis. Modern industrial production of electrolytic aluminium is carried out by the method of electrolysis of cryolite and alumina molten salt. Molten cryolite is the solvent, alumina as the solute, the carbonaceous body as the anode, the aluminium liquid as the cathode, pass into the strong direct current, in 950 ° C - 970 ° C, in the electrolytic tank on the two poles of the electrochemical reaction, that is, electrolysis. The capacity of the aluminium electrolysis industry determines to some extent the demand for calcined petroleum coke.
