Carbon raiser, as the name suggests, is used to increase carbon content and is widely used in the steelmaking and casting industries to replenish the carbon lost during the smelting process. In steelmaking, it is primarily used in ladle carbon addition, which is crucial for refining and producing high-carbon steels. Common carbon raisers include petroleum coke carbon raisers and high-quality pig iron. In casting, graphite-based high-carbon, low-sulfur products are generally chosen for nodular iron smelting, while non-graphitized petroleum coke and calcined coal are commonly used for gray iron smelting, with sulfur content generally controlled to around 0.5%.

Calcined coke carbon raisers can be divided into two main types: petroleum coke carbon raisers and graphite-based carbon raisers (including semi-graphitized carbon raisers).

 

Petroleum coke carbon raisers typically have a carbon content (C) of 96-99% and sulfur content (S) of 0.3-0.7%, with an absorption rate generally around 85%. They are commonly used in steelmaking, gray iron casting, and special carbon addition applications. Graphitized petroleum coke, on the other hand, typically has a fixed carbon content of 98-99.5%, sulfur content of 0.03-0.05%, and absorption rate generally around 90%, making them suitable for nodular iron casting.

 

Graphitized carbon raisers are of higher quality, as they can reduce impurities in the carbon raiser, increase carbon content, lower sulfur content, and significantly increase the amount of scrap steel used in casting, thereby reducing the use of pig iron or eliminating it altogether.
