Ferromanganese is an iron alloy produced by the reduction of manganese ore with coke in an electric furnace. It mainly includes high-carbon ferromanganese, medium and low-carbon ferromanganese, etc., used as deoxidizer, desulfurizer, and alloy additive in the steelmaking process. The production and quality standards of ferromanganese follow the national standard GB/T 3795-2006. Its downstream industry is mainly steelmaking enterprises, commonly used in ordinary steel smelting.

 

Importance and Applications

In the iron and steel industry, manganese iron plays a crucial role because over 90% of steel production requires Mn. As a functional basic raw material, Mn can improve the physical properties of steel by removing impurities such as sulfur and oxygen, thus enhancing its strength, hardness, and wear resistance. Therefore, it is said that "steel cannot be made without Mn." Currently, there is no other element that can completely replace Mn in the steelmaking process.

Different Types of Ferromanganese

1. High-Carbon Ferromanganese (HcFeMn): Mn content ranges from 70% to 80%, and carbon content ranges from 6% to 8%. Widely used in the production of flat steel products for carbon steel, it is the leading variety in the manganese iron market. In the production process of high-carbon FeMn, parameters affecting Mn recovery include time, basicity of furnace charge, temperature, etc.
2. Medium-Carbon Ferromanganese (McFeMn): Widely used as excellent desulfurizer and deoxidizer in the steel and chemical industries. It is smelted from manganese ore and medium-carbon coal or coke in blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces.
3. Low-Carbon Ferromanganese (LcFeMn): Mainly used in cast iron to counteract the adverse effects of sulfur. In the iron and steel industry, it acts as a deoxidizer, helping to improve the processing performance of steel.
