Carburizing agents are dark gray or deep gray particles (or small pieces) with extremely high carbon content. They are added to the melting furnace of metal materials to increase the carbon content in molten iron. The addition of carburizing agents can reduce the oxygen content in molten iron and significantly improve the structural and mechanical properties of refining or casting components. GPC 98.5 is mainly used for ductile iron casting and electric furnace steelmaking. Its characteristics include fast absorption, high carbon, and low sulfur content. It can enhance the mechanical properties of castings, reduce shrinkage tendencies, and improve machinability.

Differences Between CPC and GPC

 

 

Calcined petroleum coke (CPC) and graphitized petroleum coke (GPC 98.5) both start with raw petroleum coke but differ significantly in production, content, and applications. CPC is produced by heating raw petroleum coke to about 1300°C, which removes most moisture and volatile matter, resulting in a fixed carbon content typically above 98.5%. In contrast, GPC is created by further heating the petroleum coke to approximately 3000°C. This high-temperature process, known as graphitization, transforms the internal structure of the coke from disordered to ordered crystalline carbon, reducing sulfur content and achieving a fixed carbon content of up to 99%.

 

The sulfur content in GPC is significantly lower, ranging between 0.03% and 0.06%, with 0.05% being common, and it has a carbon absorption rate of 90%-95%. CPC, however, has a sulfur content around 0.5% and a carbon absorption rate of 80%-90%. Both types of coke are primarily used in the steelmaking and casting industries. Due to its production process, GPC 98.5, with its low sulfur, low nitrogen, and high carbon content, is particularly suitable for gray iron casting and ductile iron casting where stringent sulfur control is required.
