Manganese Iron

Manganese iron (FeMn) is an alloy consisting of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), mainly used in steel production. FeMn generally contains between 65% and 80% manganese, and depending on the application, its carbon content can range from low carbon (<0.5%) to high carbon (2%-8%). FeMn is a vital alloying additive in the steel industry, not only improving the mechanical properties of steel, but also imparting resistance to wear and corrosion.

Application areas of Manganese iron

Manganese iron has a wide range of applications in the steel industry, mainly in the following areas:

Deoxidiser and desulphuriser: Manganese iron has a good deoxidising effect in steel, it reacts with oxygen in steel to generate manganese oxide, thus reducing the oxygen content in steel. In addition, manganese also combines with sulphur to form manganese sulphide, which reduces the sulphur content of the steel and prevents hot embrittlement.

Alloying element additives: Manganese in FeMn improves the hardenability, strength and hardness of the steel, as well as its resistance to wear and corrosion.

Manufacture of different types of steel: Manganese iron is used in the production of carbon, alloy, stainless and tool steels. By adjusting the manganese content, different properties of steel can be produced to meet the various needs of engineering and manufacturing industries.

Classification of Manganese iron

FeMn can be classified into the following categories according to the carbon content:

High Carbon Manganese iron (HC FeMn): Carbon content 2-8 per cent. It is a commonly used carbon steel and can effectively improve the hardness and strength of steel.

Medium Carbon Manganese iron (MC FeMn): Carbon content is 1-2%. This product can be used in the manufacture of steels with specific carbon requirements, such as structural steels and tool steels.

Low Carbon Manganese iron (LC FeMn): Carbon content is less than 0.5%. This series of products are mainly used in special steel, stainless steel, etc., with excellent corrosion resistance.
